piano pieces, considered as his first important work
1922 Fernando Ember, his piano teacher, plays in Madrid on
March 28 the premiere of CREPUSCULOS that draws the attention of the Spanish
Writes MARCHE JOYEUSE for piano. On the cover of the score, Salvador Dali
draws his own self portrait.
1923 Adolfo Salazar, the prominent Spanish critic and musicologist introduces
him to Manuel de Falla who, on one of the works shown to him HOMMAGE PETITE
SUITE POUR TRIO writes "bravo". Greatly impressed by the quality
of the works reviewed , Falla decides quite exceptionally, to take him as
disciple to complete his musical education.
Writes a short essay on "LA OPERA CONTEMPORANEA EN ALEMANIA.MAX VON
SCHILLINGS Y SU MONA LISA". Madrid. J. Amado.
His STRING QUARTET is premiered in Madrid.
1924 Manuel de Falla appoints him Music Director the dirección
of the Orquesta Bética de Cámara de Sevilla which he had just
founded. Halffter will keep his position until the Orchestra was dissolved.
Wins the Spanish National Music Prize of that year for his SINFONIETTA for
orchestra which makes him known at the international level.
With a grant from the Junta para Ampliación de Estúdios, goes
to Paris to continue his musical studies under the guidance of Maurice Ravel.
1926 Writes the score for the film CARMEN directed
by Jacques Feyder.
1927 Conducts in Paris the stage version of EL
AMOR BRUJO by Manuel de Falla with the Spanish Ballets of la Argentina (
Antonia Merce ).
Premiere of his Sinfonietta for Orchestra on April 5th, in Madrid
1928 First performance in Madrid of the symphonic version of SONATINA later premiered
in Paris as a ballet by the Spanish Ballets of la Argentina.
Marries the Portuguese pianist Alice Camara Santos.
1931 His SINFONIETTA represents Spain at the International
Festival of the International Society of Contemporary Music, in Oxford.
Conducts several concerts in Barcelona with the celébrated Orquesta
1932 Writes SONATA PER PIANOFORTE.
Conducts several concerts at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and also in
Lima and Havana.
1934 Appointed Director of the Conservatory of
Music in Seville.
1936 In January he takes up permanent residence
in Lisbon after receiving a grant for that year from the Fundación
Conde de Cartagena of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando
in Madrid, to continue working in a foreign country as required by the statutes
of the Fundación, on his opera LA MUERTE DE CARMEN that he left unfinished
at his death.
1937 Writes L‘ESPAGNOLADE for piano on the
occasion of the International EXPO 37 in Paris and to participate in the
homage paid to the French pianist Marguerite Long., by the foreign musicians
then living in the capital of France.
1938 His son, Manuel, godson of Manuel de Falla,
is born in Lisbon.

1957 In accordance with the decision of de Falla’s
heirs, begins working on the completion of the cantata ATLANTIDA that Falla, at
his death, in 1946, left unfinished.
1961 First performance in Barcelona of excerpts
from ATLANTIDA in their concert version.
